Method 1 - The Non-Submersible Water Pump

An electricity-driven non-submersible pump pumps water out of a well with a delivery height of 6 metres maximum.

Advantage:
- inexpensive acquisition

Disadvantages:
- The water level must not fall below 6 metres; thus, the pumping of water is limited to a 
  delivery height of 6 metres maximum.
- Consumption of electricity (usually from non-renewable sources) and, if operated with a
  power unit, additional consumption of fuel or diesel and oil.

Maintenance:
- Fuel or diesel and oil must be replenished if operated with a power unit.

Running costs:
- electricity
- fuel or diesel and oil if operated with a power unit (high power costs for constant delivery).

Method 2 - The Submersible Water Pump

An electricity-driven submersible pump pumps water out of a well with a delivery height of some hundred metres.

Advantage:
- Water can be pumped out of hundreds of metres’ depths.

Disadvantages:
- Consumption of electricity (usually from non-renewable sources) and, if operated with
  a power unit, additional consumption of fuel or diesel and oil.

Maintenance:
- Fuel or diesel and oil must be replenished if operated with a power unit.

Running costs:
- electricity
- fuel or diesel and oil if operated with a power unit (high power costs for constant delivery).

 

Method 3 - The Hand Pump

A hand pump pumps water out of wells up to about 150 metres depth maximum (depending on the water level in the well). It is run with the aid of human or animal power.

Advantage:
- Inexpensive acquisition, installation and maintenance – also for Third World Countries.

Disadvantages:
- Water can only be pumped with the aid of human or animal power.

Maintenance:
- Gaskets in the pump piston must be changed once or twice per year.
  Can be carried out with low financial and labour costs.
  Maximum costs for labour and material are about EUR 250.

Running costs:
- maintenance work


Methods which use “renewable energy” sources

Method 1 - The Windmill

The wind power activates an engine which drives a system of levers with an up-and-down movement and thus pumps water out of the underground.

Advantage:
- Compared to a submersible solar water pump relatively inexpensive acquisition and simpler
  installation.

Disadvantages:
- It works only if enough wind is available.

Maintenance:
- Gaskets in the pump piston must be changed once or twice per year.
  Can be carried out with low financial and labour costs.
  Maximum costs for labour and material are about EUR 250.

Running costs:
- maintenance work


Method 2 - The Submersible Solar Water Pump
 
The submersible solar water pump is a well pump which obtains the necessary energy
- electricity - through photovoltaic panels on the surface in order to pump water out of wells to the surface.

Advantage:
- Water gets pumped constantly if enough sunlight is available.

Disadvantages:
- High acquisition and installation costs
- Installation needs to be carried out by an expert.
- In case of an unpredictable malfunction, no pumping of water is possible.
- In Third World Countries, this setup or components are sometimes subject to theft because of
  their high value, in which case pumping is no longer possible.
- Only experts can carry out repair works.
- Components for repair works have to be delivered from Europe (regarding acquisition for
  Third World Countries).

Maintenance:
- Maintenance as well as renewal of the battery system.
- In case of electronic malfunctions an expert is required, and long waiting periods may
  occur if special components have to be ordered.
- During maintenance works, no pumping of water is possible!


Running costs:
- for experts if an electronic problem occurs, during which time no water is available.
